Local Information
LANGUAGE Mandarin is the official language, although many Chinese dialects are spoken in Sanya. Predominantly English and occasionally Russian are spoken in five-star chain hotels and some stores.
CURRENCY The local currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY) and is available in the following denominations: 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 yuan, 2 yuan, 5 yuan, 10 yuan, 20 yuan, 50 yuan, and 100 yuan. Money can be exchanged at banks or hotels; exchange rates may vary and additional charges apply. Traveler’s checks are generally not accepted. Major credit cards are accepted in hotels.
ELECTRICAL STANDARD Local voltage is 220 volts AC.
SHOPPING Most shopping malls and the city’s main promenade are located in the downtown area of Jiefang Road, which is about 15 minutes by car from the marina. Shopping hours: Monday to Sunday: 10am to 10pm for most shopping malls.
MEDICAL The nearest hospital is the Sanya People’s Hospital. On-call doctors are available in Sanya.
BANKING There are several banks located in the Dadonghai Bay area, each with Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) facilities. Major international credit cards are accepted at these ATMs and an ATM is available in the Shopping Arcade for your convenience. Both local or major overseas credit cards are accepted.
